Full bio here, uwbadgers.com/staff-directory/chris-mcintosh/623 We are excited to launch a new GBO fundraising focus on sponsoring a facility dog through the American Family Children’s Hospital’s Canine Health and Medical Pals Program. Currently, the two facility comfort dogs, Kiko and Cola, provide therapeutic support to patients during hospitalizations and visits. The GBO will support the expansion of this important program with a third dog to help ease anxiety and provide furry comfort to the patients and their families. We are very excited to partner with you on this goal! Check out Kiko’s Instagram post on her one year anniversary, https://www.instagram.com/p/CjS0I18jWqL/?hl=en. Definitely woof a watch!
Thank you for your incredible support of the Greater Bucky Open benefitting the American Family Children’s Hospital and Bucky Badger student mascots. Our 2022 donation of $41,393 brings our overall total over $620k!
Once again our registration fees covered all expenses so every donation made directly benefitted our charitable mission: 93% supporting pediatric cancer research and the patient and family food program at the American Family Children’s Hospital and 7% supporting the Bucky Badger student mascot scholarship program. Pediatric Cancer Research: As you may remember, our GBO friend and superstar pediatric cancer researcher Dr. Christian Capitini leads a team providing an innovative anti-cancer therapy called CAR T, which involves genetically engineering your body’s killer cells to fight cancer. With GBO support, new types of CAR T have moved from the laboratory to clinical trials for both children and young adults with cancer. The American Family Children’s Hospital under Dr. Capitini’s leadership is a destination for children needing CAR T. In addition to helping 14 children with CAR T, Dr. Capitini hired a new faculty member from Stanford, Dr. Becky Richards, and plans to move forward with a national clinical trial testing CAR T for the first time in pediatric solid tumors. We know Bucky loves Dr. Richards too! Patient and Family Support Program: Since the beginning, GBO funds have provided family meals at the children’s hospital. This program allows parents the convenience and comfort of staying onsite with their patients. Meals continue to be delivered to patient rooms offering flexibility for families during a procedure or physical therapy sessions. Our 2022 GBO support covered lunches 5 days a week for parents and siblings for 10 weeks! GBO Family Lounge Enhancements: Happy to report that some of our fund will also be going to outfitting our Lounge with additional space to be more adolescent friendly with massage chairs, gaming systems, etc. The AFCH leadership team is extremely grateful for these new additions as it’s been a gap and need for a while. Bucky Badger Student Mascot Scholarship Program: As a former Bucky Badger student mascot, loyalty to the #1 mascot in the world is strong and the need for funding is known first-hand. To show our collective appreciation of Bucky, a small portion of the GBO funds raised provides a modest scholarship for the student mascots and will be credited at the bursar’s office. On, Wisconsin! GBO Toy Drive: we continue to provided smiles to patients thanks to your generosity with donating toys. Although we were still unable to host the Greater Bucky Open Family Fun Fest onsite at the hospital, the Child Life team sent us a picture of our 2022 toy delivery with this message: Our 2022 outing got off to another wonderful start featuring UW Women's Basketball Head Coach Marissa Moseley and our featured Patient Story, Abe Wilke! When Marisa Moseley was hired as the head coach of the Badgers in March 2021, one her of her top priorities was creating a new culture for the program. Moseley has established pillars for the Badger program:
Wisconsin set 12 school records during the 2021-22 season, including 3-pointers made in a game individually and for the team. Moseley was named one of 40 Under 40: Rising Stars in women's basketball, according to The Athletic on Nov. 23, 2021. “I could not be more thrilled about Marisa joining our Badger family,” UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez said. “She has been a winner as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach. She values the student-athlete experience on the court, in the classroom and in the community. And she is a bright, engaging person who I know our student-athletes, fellow staff members, community members and fans will come to know and enjoy. I can’t wait for her to get started.” “I am thrilled to be a Badger and to lead this program back to great heights!" - Marisa Moseley “I am thrilled to be a Badger and to lead this program back to great heights! “Moseley said. "Wisconsin has a rich and storied tradition of success in all its sports, and I am confident that our women's basketball program will be joining those ranks in the future! I can't wait to meet my team and get started! As soon as I arrived in Madison and met the people, I knew this was a special place where I could plant roots. We have a wonderful community behind us, and I look forward to connecting with all the faithful Badger fans! On Wisconsin!” 2021 Greater Bucky Open Impact Thanks to your tremendous support the Greater Bucky Open had its most successful year and exceeded our $50,000 goal! We will be making a donation of $67,374 to support innovative pediatric cancer research (61%), patient and family support food program (32%), and Bucky Badger student mascot scholarship program (7%). In addition, a large portion of our donation was eligible for matching dollars bringing our 2021 impact to $112,374. This year our registration fees covered all expenses once again, so every donation made was passed through to have a direct benefit to the American Family Children’s Hospital (AFCH). In total, together we have raised $585,645. Thank you! If you’d like to contribute to our efforts and support the below impact areas, please consider a gift here: Pediatric Cancer Research: Our GBO friend, Dr. Christian Capitini continues to advance innovative pediatric cancer research. Dr. Capitini is one of the original members of the national pediatric cancer Dream Team and more recently the co-leader of the developmental therapeutics program. Dr. Capitini and his team are developing an anti-cancer therapy called CAR T, which involves genetically engineering your body’s killer cells to fight cancer. The GBO is helping fund critical technology needed to transform new types of CAR T from the laboratory to clinical trials for both children and young adults with cancer. With the GBO support, AFCH plans to become a destination center for children needing CAR T. Patient and Family Support Program: Since the beginning, GBO funds have always provided family meals at the children’s hospital. Because of the new pandemic protocols, instead of offering the meals for pick up in the lobby, the meals are now delivered directly to the patient’s rooms which makes this program even more accessible for parents. For example, if a child is in a procedure or physical therapy, parents will not have to worry about missing the meal window in the lobby because the meals will be waiting for them in their child’s room. Our 2021 GBO support covered lunches 5 days a week for parents and siblings for 3 months! In addition, our GBO toy drive provided smiles to patients. Although we were not able to host the Greater Bucky Open Family Fun Fest onsite, the hospital’s Child Life team sent us a picture of our 2021 toy delivery with this message: We truly appreciate your continued support and generosity throughout the years to be able to help put our much-needed items into patient/family's hands. pdf thank you link Bucky Badger Student Mascot Scholarship Program: As a former Bucky Badger student mascot, loyalty to the #1 mascot in the world is strong and the need for funding is known first-hand.
